The American Hockey League, in association with The MeiGray Group, has announced a league-wide initiative designed to raise funds and heighten awareness in the wake of the hurricanes that have recently struck the Southern United States. For the first regular-season home game of each of the AHL’s 27 teams, the home team’s captain or alternate captain wore a jersey featuring a specially created Red Cross on the front of his sweater. The jersey was then autographed by the player. All proceeds from these 27 auctions will go to the American Red Cross.

The NFL is asking fans to "Join the team" and support Katrina Relief victims:

The Atlanta Braves will donate $1 for every new ticket sold in the month of September to the Mississippi American Red Cross and their Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. At a minimum the Braves and the Braves Foundation will donate $100,000. The Braves will also kick-off a donation drive at Turner Field beginning September 2.
"We were devastated to see the destruction the storm caused along the Gulf coast," said Braves Chairman and President Terry McGuirk.
"We have many fans that have been impacted by this tragic event and we wanted to reach out to them and let them know we’re here to help."
Fans are asked to donate money, canned goods, toiletries, bug spray, phone and gas cards and baby necessities (diapers, wipes, etc.) at any Braves home game in the month of September. Donations will then be distributed to the victims by the American Red Cross.
The donation drive will began September 2 in Monument Grove, and will take place there during every home game, three hours prior to the start of the game, through the first hour of the game. Monetary donations will also be
collected in the Braves Community Clubhouse located in the Fan Plaza.
The Braves are also extending an invitation to refugees who have come to metro Atlanta by donating tickets to a Braves game with meal vouchers provided by Aramark, Turner Field’s concessionaire.
